Yesterday, New York Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman hosted his first ever online town hall to discuss, in the Attorney General's words, the historic public health emergency that has been created by the opioid crisis.
Overdoses are now the leading cause of death for Americans under age 50 (U.S. Deputy Attorney General Rod J. Rosenstein Remarks on DEA Fentanyl Guidance, June 6, 2017). . At the forefront of this devastating surge in drug-related deaths is opioids. Oxycodone, hydrocodone and methadone are the most common prescription drugs used in overdose deaths and at least 1 out of every 4 people prescribed an opioid is estimated to struggle with addiction. Emergency rooms are treating over 1,000 people who have misused an opioid every day. Unfortunately, New Yorkers are not immune to this.
