Everything Old is New Again-New Guidelines for Pain Management

Methods that have existed for centuries are now being recommended as the first line of therapy for back pain. For the first time in a decade, the American College of Physicians released new guidelines (published in the Annals of Internal Medicine) for the treatment of chronic lower back pain. Yoga, acupuncture, massage and mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy are some of the recommendations. Medications such as opioid painkillers should be considered only as a last resort and only after a patient has had an inadequate response to nonpharmacologic therapy.
